Bondage Restraints: 5 Ways to Play

Looking for bondage restraint ideas? Explore various restraints and how to use them.

Woop woop! You’re under arrest! You’ve been thinking sexy thoughts that are against the law, and your lover has been commanded to restrain you with handcuffs!

Bondage restraints are such a fun way to play with “boundary edging” as one might call it.

Bondage in a sexy situation like this gives all the restraint and control to your lucky partner to use for their own personal pleasure… but you’ll get something out of this too, I promise.

5 Ways to Enjoy Bondage Restraints

Boundaries and power exchange are definitely being explored, and it can get dangerous if a few precautions are not taken. Let’s look at handcuffs and other BDSM restraints and how to play.

1. Handcuffs

If you have real-ish cuffs: KEEP the keys visible and nearby. No matter what, you have to be able to end the scene immediately if someone’s wrists are being hurt or blood circulation is being restricted. Secondly, never put someone in too excruciating of a position. Their hands may be behind their back while bent over a bed, but make sure they can breath and stay in whatever position for a while, especially if oral or penetrative sex is accompanying the restraining.

Fuzzy handcuffs are the ground floor of handcuff play. Maybe you used these when you were 16, maybe you’re 36 and have never used them—we don’t judge around here. They are simple and fun, and can be used to keep someone under enough control where they can’t use their arms, and you can do sexy stuff to their restrained self.

2. Neckties

If you don’t have handcuffs, the Dollar Store Pervertable (as we porn people like to call household objects we turn into simple sex toys) that is most often used for replacement handcuffs is a necktie. Usually silk or cotton, you can use this piece of attire to wrap around both wrists and tie to a bedpost, or do the same thing you do with handcuffs, but just make a fun bow or knot at the end, and go to town.

You can be a little less worried about causing harm with a necktie around the hands or feet, but there is still the potential to tie too tight, so try to keep enough space for one finger to fit between the skin and tie.

3. Towels

These are the next level up from neckties, and you can use rectangular towels in some more interesting ways, if you are creative and have the time. Have two towels? Maybe use one to tie up your partner, and use the other one to make a blindfold around their head. They are stronger than neckties, so you can tie someone’s body to a stronger piece of furniture.

Try spanking your lover with the end of the towel, but use a softer cotton towel if you do. With any kind of BDSM play, start small and slow before gradually increasing the size and intensity.

4. Rope

Here’s the highest level of handcuff play, and this is where it starts turning into kink officially, and possibly kinbaku or shibari. With rope bondage, you can also explore sensory deprivation by adding a blindfold.

Obviously a basic or elaborate form of handcuffs can be made with rope, and there are many places you can search online to find lessons on how to tie safely. I like Rory’s Brainworks on YouTube. Rope bondage is very serious stuff, so don’t take it lightly. And if you use rope for any scene: KEEP a pair of scissors close by!

5. Leg Spreaders

This is another secret fun toy you might find out there in the world, and if you do, use it safely but also go wild with it! A leg spreader is basically a pair of ankle restraints with a metal bar in the middle to keep the legs wide apart for whatever dastardly reason a top would want to clamp a leg spreader to a willing partner.

Leg spreaders are similar to handcuffs in that you have to be safe to not cut off circulation. My spreaders have velcro straps instead of keys to lock which make for an easier exit. Getting “arrested” for something sexy is fun with a partner, and adding a restraint bar for the legs only ramps up the anticipation and tension during an “interrogation!”
